Every quality sober living home operates by a clear set of rules. These rules exist not to control residents but to protect the community and create the conditions in which recovery can happen. Understanding what to expect before you move in helps you succeed once you're there.
Why Sober Living Has Rules
Sober living is a peer community. When one person uses or breaks the rules, everyone in the house is affected. House rules create shared accountability, protect residents in early recovery from exposure to substances, and build the life skills — responsibility, reliability, consistency — that support long-term sobriety.
The Most Common Sober Living House Rules
Zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol: No exceptions. This is the foundation of every sober living home. A resident who uses puts the entire community at risk.
Employment or active job searching: Most quality sober living homes require residents to work or be actively pursuing employment. Some allow recently-released treatment clients a short grace period to find work.
On-time rent payment: Financial responsibility is part of recovery. Paying rent on time, every week, builds real-life accountability.
Curfew and overnight policies: Many homes have curfews, especially for newer residents. Overnight absences typically require manager approval.
Random drug screening: Regular, random urine drug screens verify sobriety. Refusal to test is treated as a positive result.
Chores and household participation: Everyone contributes to maintaining the home. Shared responsibility builds community.
Respect for housemates and property: No fighting, harassment, or damage to property.
Meeting attendance: Many homes encourage or require attendance at AA, NA, or other recovery meetings.
No overnight guests during restricted hours: Guest policies vary but are typically clearly defined.
What Happens If You Break the Rules?
In most sober living homes, rule violations — especially drug use — result in immediate discharge. The house community depends on every member holding the line. This may feel harsh, but it protects every other resident.
